How the comparison works

Most people get one solar quote. They fill in a form, wait for a call, sit through a home visit, and end up with a single price and nothing to measure it against.

This works the other way round. You see the numbers first and decide who to talk to second.

1. Tell us about your home. Your property, roughly how much electricity you use, your address, and where your roof sits on the map.

2. See your roof and a system sized for it. Usable roof area, how many panels will fit, and a system worked out for your household — size in kWp, panel count, battery, inverter, and an estimated annual saving.

3. Compare installers side by side. Every matched installer appears with a full quote for that system, plus their company details, guarantee, rating and track record.

4. Sort and filter. By price, reviews, projects completed, years of experience, rating, guarantee or installation lead time. There’s no “recommended” badge and no paid position at the top of the list.

5. Contact whoever you choose. Pick an installer and get in touch for a firm quote and a site survey.

What makes these quotes comparable

Comparing solar quotes is normally hard because no two installers are answering the same question. One prices a 4kWp array with no battery, another an 8kWp system with 10kWh of storage. The totals sit next to each other and mean nothing.

Here, every installer is quoting for the same roof and the same electricity usage, working to the same target output. The brief is fixed before anyone prices it.

What each installer builds to that brief differs, and it should. They stock different equipment — one works with 440W panels, another with 400W, and their battery and inverter ranges differ too. So the quotes come back with different panel counts, slightly different system sizes and different storage, all aimed at the same result for your home.

That variation is the actual choice in front of you. Normally it’s invisible, because you only ever see one installer’s version of it.

Two things keep the quotes measurable against each other. The brief is identical, so nobody is pricing a 3kWp system against someone else’s 8kWp. And because the sizes vary a little, dividing each total by its kWp gives you a like-for-like figure — there’s a section on how to do that below.

Nobody contacts you until you ask

No installer receives your name, address or enquiry until you pick them and reach out. Contact one and one hears from you. Contact three and three do. If you want to look at prices and close the tab, that’s a normal way to use the site.

What MCS certification actually guarantees

Every installer on this site is MCS-certified. It’s worth knowing precisely what that does and doesn’t cover, because a lot of solar marketing treats it as a general quality badge and it isn’t.

What it does

  • It’s the gateway to export payments. To register for the Smart Export Guarantee — getting paid by your supplier for the electricity you send back to the grid — your installation and installer need MCS certification or a scheme recognised as equivalent. Without it, most suppliers won’t take you on. On a typical system that’s a real sum over the life of the panels.
  • It protects your manufacturer warranties. Panel and inverter warranties commonly require installation by a certified professional. An uncertified install can void cover before the system has generated a single unit.
  • It means the installer has been audited. Certification covers both the products and the company fitting them, against defined workmanship and safety standards, with periodic re-assessment rather than a one-off sign-off.
  • It puts a workmanship guarantee behind the job. MCS-certified work comes with guarantee cover that gives you recourse if the installer stops trading — separate from the manufacturer’s product warranty, which covers the hardware itself.

What it doesn't

  • MCS is not a legal requirement to fit solar panels. You can have a system installed by an uncertified electrician. You’ll simply lose SEG eligibility and probably your warranties.
  • More importantly: certification is a floor, not a ceiling. It confirms a company meets a recognised baseline. It doesn’t promise that a specific job will be done well, that the design suits your roof, or that the price is fair. Two MCScertified installers can quote the same house £2,000 apart and both be entirely legitimate.
  • That’s the reason this page exists. Certification narrows the field to companies worth considering. Comparing quotes is how you choose between them.
  • Worth also checking: whether the installer holds an insurance-backed guarantee, and how long their workmanship warranty runs. Two years is a common minimum; five to ten is what better installers offer. Both appear on the installer’s profile in your comparison.

What a fair price per kWp looks like in 2026

Solar is priced per kilowatt-peak — kWp — which is the system’s output under standard test conditions. Dividing a quote by its kWp gives you a figure you can hold against any other quote, and it’s the single most useful number when you’re comparing.

The 2026 benchmark

MCS data on registered domestic installations in early 2026 puts the average fully installed cost at around £8,677, working out at roughly £1,686 per kW. Separate government analysis published in June 2026 gives an average of about £1,785 per kilowatt for systems in the 4–10kW range.

So the honest answer for 2026 is that a typical domestic install lands somewhere around £1,600–£1,800 per kWp, before storage.

Zero-rate VAT applies to eligible solar and battery installations until 31 March 2027, so quotes you receive now should already have no VAT on them. If a quote shows VAT added, ask why before anything else.

How to use the £/kWp figure

Take the total, divide by the system size, and compare. A quote at £1,400 per kWp is cheap and a quote at £2,100 is expensive — but neither number tells you whether it’s wrong, because the figure is only comparable when the two quotes cover the same scope.

That’s the trap in per-kWp comparison, and it’s worth being blunt about: the cheapest quote very often achieves its price by leaving something out. A budget string inverter instead of a hybrid. No bird protection. A shorter workmanship warranty. Scaffolding priced optimistically. The gap turns up later.

On your comparison the brief is fixed before anyone prices it, so the per-kWp figures sit much closer to like-for-like than quotes gathered cold. Read them alongside the equipment, though — a hybrid inverter or a larger battery legitimately pushes the figure up, and that’s worth paying for rather than a red flag.

Wherever you’re comparing, ask for an itemised breakdown naming the panel manufacturer, the inverter make and model, the mounting system and the warranty terms. Per-kWp tells you which quote is cheaper. The itemisation tells you why.

Why insaller quotes vary so much

Two MCS-certified companies can quote the same roof thousands of pounds apart. Some of that is margin. Most of it isn’t. Here’s where the difference actually comes from.

Equipment tier. Panel efficiency and warranty length vary widely at similar wattage. Inverters vary more: a basic string inverter is the cheapest route, a hybrid inverter costs several hundred pounds more but lets you add a battery later without replacing it, and microinverters or optimisers cost more again but handle shaded roofs far better. An installer quoting for a shaded roof without optimisation is quoting a cheaper system that will generate less.

Roof access and scaffolding. A two-storey semi with clear side access is straightforward. A three-storey terrace on a narrow street, a conservatory in the way, or restricted parking all add cost before a single panel goes up.

Roof construction. Slate is slower and more fragile to work than concrete tile. Multiple roof planes mean more mounting hardware and more labour than one clean south-facing pitch. Older roofs sometimes need remedial work first, which a survey will find and a map won’t.

Electrical work. Some homes need a consumer unit upgrade or a new earthing arrangement before the system can be connected. It’s a common source of post-survey price increases and a common omission from cheap quotes.

Grid connection. Larger systems need approval from your regional network operator before they can be connected, rather than simple notification afterwards. That’s a process cost, and it’s part of why the price per kWp doesn’t scale in a straight line.

Battery specification. Capacity, chemistry and whether the battery is AC or DC coupled all move the number substantially. Battery is usually the largest single variable between two otherwise similar quotes.

Warranty and aftercare. A ten-year workmanship warranty backed by insurance costs the installer more to offer than a two-year one. That difference is in the price, and it’s worth something.

The company itself. A national operator with a call centre and a sales commission structure carries costs a five-person local firm doesn’t. Neither is automatically better — but it explains part of the spread, and it’s why the company detail sits next to the price on every quote here.
